Sofiane
A 24-year-old Sofiane, a resident of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, filed a complaint against a police officer. He accuses the police officer of having beaten him severely and gratuitously on July 13, 2023. He described the violence and that he was “afraid to go out on the street”.
On July 13, 2023, Sofiane was still having trouble recovering from the accident. With a bandaged arm and neck brace, he decided at midnight to go down to see friends from his home in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. According to the young man, suddenly an arrest team arrived and ordered them not to move, then one of the police officers threw a tear gas grenade at them. Sofiane’s friends scattered in different directions and he was unable to move because of the injuries he sustained in the accident. One of the police officers struck Sofiane in the face with a baton, knocking out two of his teeth, then struck his injured arm and back.
Following Sofiane’s complaint, on July 16, 2023, the Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the “violence by a person in the course of duty”, which was referred to the police. Sofiane has yet to see a psychiatrist to assess the psychological effects of the attack.
MASS MEDIA ABOUT THE CASE:
According to his lawyer, the young man, who has no criminal record, has never had any dealings with the police before. However, after the incident, Sofiane says he can no longer leave the house alone for fear of encountering the police again.
CASE STATUS:
The initiative group has asked French President Emmanuel Macron and French Minister of Justice Eric Dupont-Moretti for clarification on the current case. The initiative group considers it important to combat police violence and can provide legal and informational assistance to Sofiane and his family if necessary.
