Robert Eldard
Robert Eldard, 49, died while in police custody in Bellingham, Washington.
In March 2018 police were responding a call about a man who was behaving erratically in a homeless center. At the scene police found Eldard. Officers took him out of the center and handcuffed him. CCTV footage shows officers pinning Eldard to the ground for eight minutes. He lost consciousness and died.
In May 2021, the Eldard’s son filed a lawsuit against the city and the police department and accused police of using excessive force. The family’s lawyer said police continued restraining Robert Eldard after he lost consciousness instead of immediately rendering aid.
MASS MEDIA ABOUT THE CASE:
“Video evidence establishes that while Mr. Eldard indicated he could not breathe, three police officers continued to detain him on the ground, handcuffed, until he lost consciousness. Instead of immediately rendering aid, the officers did not notice Mr. Eldard’s condition, and he died,” according to a statement provided by Dan Fiorito, the Eldard’s attorney.
