Rémi Fraisse
Rémi Fraisse, environmental activist, 21, was killed by an offensive grenade launched by the police.
On 26 October 2014 Fraisse took part in a mobilization against the creation of a dam in south-western France. There was fighting between the police and the protestors. According to his relatives, Fraisse felt outraged, and ran spontaneously towards a skirmish, when he realized how violent the National Gendarmerie was being against the demonstrators. He was struck by a stun grenade fired by the police and killed instantly. Some minutes later, his body was collected by the authorities.
In March 2021, the highest court of the judicial order rejected the appeal brought by the family of Rémi Fraisse against a judgment of the investigating chamber of the Toulouse Court of Appeal, considering that the latter had “justified its decision” by confirming the dismissal in January 2020.
The family had already warned that, if they did not win their case in France, they would seize the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
On June 17, the Toulouse Court of Appeal rejected a claim about gendarme who pressured a witness who was present during the clashes to change his testimony.
