Noam Cohen
Noam Cohen, 27, was shot and killed by a Montreal (Canada) police officer in June 2017.
Cohen’s father called the police and told he was in distress and meant to hurt himself or others with his car. He reportedly suffered from mental health problems. The police found him sitting in a parked car. Cohen drove off as soon as he saw the police officers pull out their Tasers.
The police began a chase. Cohen reportedly exceeded the speed limit. Police cars blocked his car. The police said that he intended to crash into police cars, so one of the officers shot him 8 times. Two bullets hit him in the head and fatally wounded him.
In 2018, the Crown decided not to charge officers involved in the arrest. In May 2021, the trial began in this case. The Cohen family has demanded $ 2.4 million in damages and charged police officers with abuse of authority.
MASS MEDIA ABOUT THE CASE:
The prosecution claims that the SPVM agents demonstrated “abuse of authority in handcuffing Mr. Cohen after he was shot twice in the head.”
Cohen’s family claim in their lawsuit that there were “other measures available to Constable Rodier to stop Noam Cohen’s escape before discharging eight rounds from his firearm. Agent Rodier could have fired warning shots or directed his shots at the tires of Noam Cohen’s vehicle. There was no imminent danger justifying the use of lethal force “.
CASE STATUS:
