Maurice Gordon
Maurice Gordon Jr., 28, was shot and killed by a New Jersey State Police Sergeant in May 2020.
Gordon was waiting for a tow truck when the officer encountered him and offered him to wait in a patrol car. In a video Gordon and the officer are seen having a physical altercation.
According to police Gordon tried to get into the driver’s seat of the patrol car. The officer fired 6 shots and killed Gordon. The officer claims Gordon tried to reach for his weapon.
In March 2021 Gordon’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit and demanded a trial by jury. In May 2021 the family said they still waiting for the grand jury to convene.
MASS MEDIA ABOUT THE CASE:
“The family is alleging that Junior’s constitutional and other rights were violated and that racism in policing led to excessive force and Junior’s wrongful death and is demanding a trial by jury,” the family’s attorney said.
“I wish I had a bit of closure to know what happened to [Maurice]. It’s just difficult as a mother because he’s not going to come back. There’s no way he can come back … My hope is [the officer will] get some sort of sentence or something, even lose his job,” Gordon’s mother said.
CASE STATUS:
The initiative group has requested the clarification from US President Joseph Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland. The initiative group believes it is important to fight against police brutality and, if necessary, will provide legal and financial assistance to the family of the victim.
