Mark Duggan

Mark Duggan, 29, was shot and killed by police in London, UK.

On 4 August 2011, police pulled over a car. He was in the passenger seat. Duggan got out of the car and tried to escape. Police fired several shots and killed him. Police said he had a gun and officers had ordered him to put it down.

A driver of the car said police fired without warning. In 2020, an investigation by independent organization was published. It concluded that Duggan most likely did not have a gun in his hands when police shot him.

In May 2021, Duggan’s family accused police of “lack courage” to open a new investigation after new evidence appeared. In 2013, the investigation into this case was closed.

“Nobody came to my uncle’s house officially to say what had happened to Mark. This is why the following day, my family peacefully went down to Tottenham police station to find out what had happened,” Mark Duggan’s cousin said.

When an eyewitness at the scene of Duggan’s death gave evidence to the inquest, they were quoted saying: “They could have just approached him and put him down, put the cuffs on him. But they didn’t.”
