Jean Olivier
On August 1, 2021, a 37-year-old black man, Jean-René “Junior” Olivier, was shot and killed by a police officer in Repentigny, Canada.
Olivier’s mother called the police because he was delirious and saw people around him who wanted to harm him. He had a knife in his hands. His mother called the police for officers to help take him to a psychiatric hospital. A police officer found Olivier on the street and shot him 3 times.
Olivier’s relatives believe that he died due to police discrimination and that officers would not have done this to a white man. The victim’s family is confident that the officer may have used other methods to disarm him. The family also does not understand why it was necessary to shoot 3 times. The police are investigating the case and have not yet commented on it.
Olivier’s mother filed a lawsuit against the police and accused the police of racial profiling.
MASS MEDIA ABOUT THE CASE:
“When I called the police, I told them to take my son to a mental hospital as soon as the ambulance arrived. I made that clear. And look what happened. White people, we don’t kill them like that,” Jean René Junior Olivier’s mother said.
La Presse
“I called for help and then found my son on the ground,” Olivier’s mother said. “I find this absurd. There were other ways to do this, other means of disarming him, but they didn’t do that.”
