Jade Mutua
A 22-year-old London resident, Jade Mutua, was fatally struck by a car driven by Police Officer Gary Watkinson on August 13, 2019.The police officer applied the brakes less than a second after seeing Ms. Mutua step out into the road from behind a parked Land Rover, but the car was traveling at about 62 mph in a 30 mph zone when it struck her. The girl suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where she died two days later.
An investigation into Ms. Mutua’s death by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) found that Officer Watkinson “acted in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.” In October 2023, it became notorious that the police officer who ran down Jade Mutua to death was found not guilty of his actions, sparking fury from the dead girl’s father. Jermaine Laxmidas, condemned the decision and stated that he intends to ensure that the police officer responsible for his daughter’s death is justly punished.
