DeShaya Reed
DeShaya Reed, 16, was punched by Lansing police officer in 2019.
Police were responding a call about an argument. At the scene they found Reed and other teenagers. They tried to escape from the officers. They caught Reed in a few minutes. They handcuffed her and took her to the ground.
Reed told the officers that the handcuffs were too tight. Officers took her to the patrol car. When the officers tried to close the car door, Reed stuck her leg out to prevent the officer from closing the car door, as the girl did not want the police to take her away until her mother knew where she was. Body camera footage shows one of the police officers punching Reed 17 times in the thigh, trying to get her into the car.
In June 2021, the Reed filed a lawsuit against the city and the police department, accusing them of using excessive force, racial discrimination and denial of due process.
