Clive Mensah

Clive Mensah, 30, died on November 20, 2019, after he was tased several times by police officers.

Police were called to Mensah’s neighborhood in Mississauga, Ontario, following multiple reports of a disturbance. Three officers followed Mensah into his backyard. They ordered him to lie down and put his hands behind his back. He lay down but reportedly continued to “flail his arms.”

At that point, one of the other officers fired a Taser at Mensah, who then got up and “advanced” toward the officer. Mensah was tased again. He is then described as going “rigid” and falling “face down” onto the ground. All three officers then moved to restrain Mensah, holding his arms and legs. When that was “ineffective,” one of the officers deployed his own Taser and proceeded to spray pepper spray toward the back of Mensah’s head. Officers handcuffed him behind his back. Mensah became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In March 2019 Ontario’s police watchdog has ruled there will be no criminal charges against the officers involved in the death of Mensah. Mensah’s family issued a written statement saying they’re devastated by the decision and will continue seeking justice for him.
