Chase Brooks
Chase Brooks, 32, was shot and killed on March 14, 2020, by a police officer in Springfield, Oregon.
Police say Brooks was threatening a witness in a car with a tire iron when police officers arrived. Brooks who had mental health issues allegedly turned and moved towards them with the tire iron in his hands. One of the officers fired 3 shots. Brooks died at the scene.
Post-mortem exam revealed that “one round went through the heart and one went through a lung”. His family believes officers should have used non-lethal weapons or called someone prepared to deal with people suffering from mental health issues.
In March 2021 Brooks’ family filed $2 million wrongful death claim. The lawsuit alleges police used excessive force.
In March 2022 Brooks’ family filed a lawsuit which claims the 911 call taker and operator gave police inaccurate information that caused them to “behave in an aggressive and lethal manner.”

“The speed and determination of Mr. Brooks to come at Officer Pardee with a weapon left Officer Pardee with no choice but to end the situation as quickly and safely as possible for himself and the many other people in the area,” the District Attorney said.

“Based upon the above, I have determined that the use of deadly force by Springfield Officer Eric Pardee was a lawful use of force,” the District Attorney said.

CASE STATUS:
The initiative group has requested the clarification from US President Joseph Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland. The initiative group believes it is important to fight against police brutality and, if necessary, will provide legal and financial assistance to the family of the victim.
