CASE INFORMATION:

Jacob Dau, 38, was shot and killed by a police officer in Clinton, Iowa.

On April 7, 2020, Clinton Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Jacob Dau, suspecting Dau was barred from driving. When Dau failed to pull over, a high-speed pursuit ensued.

Clinton Police Officer Ryan Livesay deployed stop-sticks on the pavement to disable Dau’s car. Dau, however, maneuvered his car around the stop-sticks and drove along a nearby bike path where Livesay was positioned. Livesay opened fire, discharging his firearm 17 times and killing Dau.

Three weeks after the shooting, Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf announced he believed the shooting was justified and no charges would be filed in the case. In May 2021 Dau’s family has filled a federal lawsuit against the city of Clinton and police officers. The lawsuit alleges actions of police officers amounted to excessive force and were in clear in violation of state law.

The initiative group has requested the clarification from US President Joseph Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland. The initiative group believes it is important to fight against police brutality and, if necessary, will provide legal and financial assistance to the family of the victim.
