Hawaiian resident

In April 2021, 29-year-old black father of two, Lindani Myeni, was gunned down by Honolulu, Hawaii police officers after he allegedly attacked police officers.

On the night of April 14, 2021, the Honolulu, Hawaii Police Department received a burglary call. As the officers arrived at the potential crime scene, the landlord pointed to Myeni as a suspect. Reportedly, Myeni refused to obey the orders of the officers and lie on the ground, they used a stun gun against him. However, this did not seem to them enough, and after Myeni allegedly attacked one of the police officers, his colleague fired three shots at the suspect, after which he fell to the ground. A few seconds after the shot, the officer who had fired at Myeni shouted: “Police!” Myeni was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he died a few hours later from his injuries.

In April 2021, the family of an unarmed black man shot dead by Honolulu police filed a lawsuit against the officers, claiming the police were racially motivated. South Africans living in Honolulu took to the streets demanding justice for Myeni.
