Darryl Tyree Williams, 32, died Jan. 17, 2023, after North Carolina law enforcement officers used excessive force. Minutes before his arrest, the man had repeatedly warned law enforcement officers that he was experiencing heart problems and any interaction could be fatal to him.
Police officers noticed boxes of alcohol in Williams’ vehicle, after which they almost immediately decided to arrest him. The unarmed man was forcibly dragged from the vehicle before being thrown to the ground and tasered. Williams, 32, who posed no threat to law enforcement officers, lost consciousness several minutes later.
Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the man dead. The police officers involved in the incident were suspended from duty.
