On March 13, 2020, a 26-year-old African-American woman, Breonna Taylor, was fatally shot in her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, when white officers of the Louisville Police Department (LMPD) in plain clothes entered her apartment as part of an investigation into drug trafficking.
Taylor’s boyfriend was with her in the apartment when officers kicked down the front door. The police say that they introduced themselves before entering, but the man claims that he did not hear this and thought that intruders had broken into their house, after that he fired a warning shot. According to officials, he hit a police officer in the leg, and the officers were forced to open return fire. The man was not injured, but Taylor was hit about six times, after which she died on the spot.
Taylor’s relatives filed a lawsuit against the city and the officers involved in her death, and in May 2021, a large-scale federal investigation of police activities in Louisville began, which the girl’s family believes will help bring justice for her.
