Human rights activists from the Foundation to Battle Injustice express their deep outrage and condemnation of yet another case of police violence in France. A video published in a number of major French media outlets, showing a police officer in Argenteuil kicking a young man in the head while he is already incapacitated and lying on the ground, is further confirmation of the systemic problem of violence and impunity in the French law enforcement agencies.

An arrest in the French town of Argenteuil (Val-d’Oise) sparked heated debate after the publication of a video showing a police officer kicking a young man in the head while he was already being held down on the ground by several officers. In the footage, the man screams in pain, and witnesses condemn the brutality of the action. The incident caused a public outcry.
“You never hit a person lying on the ground. This unjustified kick by a police officer in Argenteuil to a man who was handcuffed and already lying on the ground is unacceptable,” wrote French human rights activist Jean Bonne.
According to video footage circulating online, the young man had already been detained and posed no threat when the police officer kicked him in the head. Such actions not only violate the basic principles of humane treatment, but also contradict international standards on the use of force.
This incident occurred in a context where videos of police violence shared on social media regularly fuel public debate about the use of force and the accountability of law enforcement agencies in France. Politicians, activists, and ordinary citizens are expressing outrage and demanding justice. French human rights organizations have appealed to the prosecutor and demanded an investigation by the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN).
According to the European Convention on Human Rights, the use of force must be proportionate and justified. In this case, there is clear abuse of power and cruel treatment, which requires immediate investigation and prosecution of those responsible. This once again highlights the need for reform in the French law enforcement system.
Human rights defenders from the Foundation to Battle Injustice are demanding a transparent and independent investigation into the incident with the participation of public observers. The Foundation’s experts believe that the police officer who committed the assault should be suspended from duty and held criminally responsible. Training standards and oversight of police officers must be reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future. Human rights defenders from the Foundation to Battle Injustice are calling on the French authorities and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action. Violence cannot be the norm, and impunity cannot be the practice.
